Some Secret Self Portraits

Check out the clever self portrait work of Liu Bolin at:

http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/meet-the-real-life-invisible-man.html

What do you think of this idea?
Do you think a self portrait NEEDS to feature the person's face?
What is he telling you about HIMSELF with this work?
Think psychologically,
... if a person does not include their FACE in a self portrait, what does that say about them???

I think this idea is unique and i would have never even thought about that! This guy must have had a lot of time on his hands to do this. I think a self portrait should include your face but they don't say how to show it. Put your own unique way of showing it. That he shows that this is his work and no one else does it. Shows that people come up with different techniques to show there own habit. They either don't want there face to be shown or that's just there art.

I think this idea is really cool and looks extremely hard. I don't think you need a self portrait needs to feature the person's face although most people do. He is telling you that he puts a lot of time and work into what he's doing and that his art is a protest against the actions of the government.

i think this idea is unique. To not show your face in a self portrait is like hiding your identity. Isn't that the point of a self portrait; to show your identity?

I think that the way this guy does his self portraits is pretty cool. I do think that you need your face in the picture to have it actually be a self portrait. I think that because self portraits are showing what you look like and your face is a big part of showing that.

I think that if this man didn't include his face in his self portrait, he would be more of an object. I do believe that faces are required for self portraits. What I think he's saying, is that he easily fool people when they don't have the attention to detail.

I think this is kind of cool. These portraits don't need face shots because it is not the point of the picture. This is a good concept because it is something that is not often done.

I think that this is a really cool idea. I think that a self portrait does need to include their face in a self portrait. He wants to be able to go around and show how anything can be a self portrait. It doesn't saying anything about them its just a piece of art anyway.

I think in this self portrait the guy/girl is giving the effect that they blend in with everything and don't really care for people and are alone. They evolve the world around them instead of standing out.

I think that a self portrait goes deeper the the outer soul. In my eyes, a self portrait can show what the person is like in the inside and not just what he looks like. Self portraits can also show hobbies and things that someone likes.

i think this idea is kinda cool. yes because it is called a self portrait. he is blending in with his surroundings or standing out from people. if a person doesn't include their face in a self portrait then it probable means psychologically that they are a shy person.

I like this idea. I think this shows creativity and maybe a side to someones personality, depending on what setting the person is standing in. It may show where a person comes from or hobbies they have depending on what they try to blend into.

i think this type of portrait is itriging and fun. it is a project that i would like to do. i think that this captures the peoples eye

I think it's really cool, on a few of them I couldn't even see the person. I don't think that someone's face has to be in a self portrait, I think it just needs to show that there is actually someone in the portrait. If someone doesn't show their face, I think maybe they're scared and want to remain anonymous.

Doing your self portrait this way I think is really creative. I don't think a self portrait should be just your face. I think it should be a reflection of your personality and your interests in life.

I think this idea is clever and unique but a little creepy. A self portrait doesn't necessarily need to include their face it could include the rest of their body without the face and be fine. His work tells me that he may be trying to psychologically show he is a person whether his face is shown or not and he blends in with the crowd.

I think this idea is cool because he can blend himself into whatever is behind him at the moment. I think a portrait is needed, he is telling you he is proud of his work and its better to show your face. If a person does not include their face, they are not proud of their work.

I think that by the way he blends in that he is saying he blends in with sociaty and he is a loner. Especially by hidding his face. But it isnt really a sad or gloomy picture so he might be ok with blending in and is fine with being a loner.

its a really cool idea. a self portrait is more about what you are not what you look like. i can tell he is one with his surroundings. not including their face might show that their looks aren't the most important to them.

This idea is good but i think he needs to be in areas that have more busy backgrounds. I think a self portrait the person needs to feature their face because that's how you can tell who it is. This is a very cool concept. He's not showing himself physically, but he's giving an insight into his personality. This shows that he may be reclusive, or like to keep to himself. He's the type of person who just stands back and watches life happen around him. Rather than going out and starting a conversation himself, he'd rather listen to others speak.

I think idea is really cool because it's not something you see everyday. Although, I do think that in self portraits you should include your face. I feel like he is the kind of person that doesn't want to stand out. If someone doesn't have a face in their picture, I think it shows that they are either a dark person or a person that doesn't want to be seen. They want to be something like a shadow at least.

I think this was really creative of the artist. No, i don't believe that a self portrait needs to have the persons face in it. I believe that the person in this picture is telling us that he doesn't stand out in the streets or where he is. I believe that a person does not include their face in their self portrait they might either be saying that they aren't comfortable with themselves, or that they don't want to stand out.

This is a creative idea but is probably extremely time consuming. I believe a self-portrait does not have to include your face. It probably doesn't even have to involve your body. I believe a self-portrait is what you see yourself as, a self-image, rather. But when a person does not involve his or her face in a self-portrait, I think that the person is insecure, that they don't think their face is 'worthy' to be in a picture or portrait. This man is obviously really committed to what he is doing & that is inspiring.

I go back and forth between whether or not a self portrait needs to include a face. When i think of a self portrait i envision a face, however, when an artist does a self portrait they are usually expressing how they see themself. So maybe this artist feels as if he is blending into the surrounding. I don't exactly understand why its a phone booth though.
